Welcome to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship Program at UMass Chan Medical School. Our mission is to launch the careers of academic gastroenterologists by providing a broad foundation in clinical gastroenterology and hepatology alongside training in research and teaching.

Fellows at UMass Chan receive a diverse education, including the following experiences:

  • The UMass Memorial Health Transplant Program is one of the largest in the Northeast, and fellows work with this particularly challenging patient population in a multidisciplinary care model.
  • Fellows rotate with our advanced endoscopy faculty and have the opportunity for hands-on experience in diagnostic and therapeutic EUS and ERCP.
  • Fellows are trained in the complete arsenal of diagnostic and therapeutic small bowel enteroscopy including video capsule endoscopy, antegrade Spirus, and retrograde double-balloon enteroscopy.
  • UMass Memorial Health provides a comprehensive program in GI motility, including high-resolution esophageal manometry, POEM, Endoflip, and anorectal manometry, all of which are accessible to fellows for the management of their patients and their own training.
  • With a growing team of IBD care providers–including adult and pediatric gastroenterologists, surgeons, APPs, nurses, and nutritionists–fellows will have the opportunity to manage routine and complicated cases of IBD and integrate a rapidly- expanding field of therapeutic options.
  • As newer fields, such as endobariatrics and artificial intelligence-based evaluations are integrated into our division, fellows will gain experience in these fields and learn how they will integrate into future practice models.

Fellows will master the pathophysiology related to diseases of the gastrointestinal system and the liver; hone their skills in generating a focused differential diagnosis based on accurate history taking, physical examination, and interpretation of available data; develop a deep understanding of the indications and contraindications for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and develop the skills to perform these procedures; polish their ability to interact respectfully with all members of the team delivering care to their patients; and appreciate the humanistic and ethical aspects of medicine.


Alongside their clinical training, fellows will participate in the GI conferences both by attending and presenting at these meetings. They will also develop their own research projects with faculty guidance. These projects can be developed within the Division of Gastroenterology, but fellows are also encouraged and supported to explore additional mentorship outside the division.
