Current and Former Fellows

Meet our current Global Health fellows: 

Luis Raulo Colon-Mulero, MD is a 2019 graduate of the UMass Chan Family Medicine Residency (Family Health Center) and a 2016 graduate of University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, having earned his BS in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico in 2009. Dr. Colon-Mulero founded the FMIG group at his medical school and is interested in global health, population health and health advocacy. A singer and guitarist, Raulo also enjoys playing soccer. 


Duy Duc Nguyen, MD is a 2016 graduate of St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada and a 2020 graduate of Ascension St. John Hospital Family Medicine Residency in Detroit, MI. He earned his BA in Biology with a Chemistry minor from Ave Maria University in 2012. Dr. Nguyen is a  Canadian native who enjoys ice hockey, hiking and camping with his wife and two dogs. 


FORMER GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWS 


Satu Salonen, MD, MPH (2016-2018)
Satu is a 2012 graduate of American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and a 2016 graduate of the University of Nevadeo, Reno Residency Program. She is a 2008 graduate of Drexel University School of Public Health with a Masters in Public Health with a focus in Epidemiology. In 2005, Satu earned her BA in Science at Seattle University. She attended GH fellowship from 2016-2018. Her training focused heavily on refugee care, asylum care and work in Dominican Republic on CHW training. As part of her asylum care she completed training by PHR and was part of the team working in Bangladesh documenting war crimes committed against the Rohingya minorities from Myanmar.


Danielle Fitzsimmons-Pattison, MD (2017-2019)
Danielle is a 2014 graduate of the Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Residency in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She earned her MD from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque in 2007 and both her BS in Biology and her BA in Foreign Languages (German) from New Mexico State University in 2000. Danielle attended GH fellowship from 2017-2019. She came to the fellowship with unique interest and passion for Border Health work and desire to bring back home ideas on possible Border Health fellowship and training. She completed a comprehensive national survey to assess the need and interest in such training and will be publishing her findings soon. She completed PHR training and became skilled at performing asylum evaluations – skill that she now regularly applies when working with patients in or recently released from detention centers back home in New Mexico. Lastly, her international work focused on CHW training in Dominican Republic and supervision and training of UMass Chan students working in DR.

FORMER PREVENTIVE MEDICINE/GLOBAL HEALTH FELLOWS

Daria Szkwarko, DO (2014-2016) completed her family medicine residency at Brown University where she was a Chief resident and received a teacher of the year award. Her FM interests include global health, implementation science, medical education, and maternal child health. She is particularly interested in primary care implementation in low resource settings and her current research focus is tuberculosis child contact tracing in Kenya.  When she's not traveling the globe, Daria enjoys cooking, gardening, yoga, and triathlon.

Daria attended the Prev Med/GH fellowship in 2014-2016 and was instrumental in helping get the FHCW refugee clinic off the ground. She also led efforts on training primary care providers to care for patients with LTBI and created numerous protocols to standardize such care. Internationally, she focused her work in Kenya where she had worked previously and became the lead for Family Medicine in the AMPATH consortium. Now Daria serves as the Director of the GH fellowship at Brown University.

Leanne Jones, MD (2016-2018) is a 2016 graduate of the Valley Family Medicine Residency in Modesto, CA. Leanne earned her MD in 2013 from SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine (now the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Buffalo.) She is also a 2008 Magna  Cum Laude graduate of Houghton College in New York. During her Prev Med/GH fellowship with UMass from 2016-2018, her international work focused on site in Kenya where together with Daria she conducted POCUS US training and led a study evaluating the impact on such training on Family Medicine physicians in Kenya. Locally, she led efforts to support UMass Chan student interest group on refugee health and conducted and presented a study on pediatric obesity among recently resettled refugee children.
