I am a Professor of Microbiology at the UMass Chan Medical School. I received a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medicine from Zhejiang University, China, and a doctorate in Physiology from Iowa State University. Since 1999 I have been a faculty member at the UMass Chan, first in the former Department of Physiology and then in Microbiology and Physiological Systems. I have served on grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the National Science Foundation and several international funding agencies. My research focuses on Ca2+ signaling, ion channels, and bitter taste receptors in neurons, neuroendocrine cells and smooth muscle. My laboratory has been supported by grants from private and federal funding sources, including the American Heart Association, the Charles H. Hood Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health.
