Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship

Director’s message

The Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School is a one-year fellowship through the Fellowship Council. The fellowship has been offered at UMass since 1997. Eligible candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency and be eligible for the American Board of Surgery qualifying and certifying exams. The fellowship provides experience and expertise in bariatric surgery, advanced foregut, abdominal wall reconstruction, solid organ, and hernia surgery. The fellow will gain experience in robotic surgery as well as laparoscopy and endoscopy in addition to scholarly activity.

Emily Mackey, MD

Emily Mackey, MD is thrilled to be at UMass Chan Medical School for the Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship for 2023-2024. Emily attended Amherst College, and received her BA in Russian Studies. She then completed research in interventional cardiology and clinical trials before starting medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine. While at Tufts, she was a member of the admissions committee, and participated in the Longwood Symphony Orchestra as violinist. She completed her general surgery residency at UMass Chan Medical School. During residency, she presented at multiple meetings, including Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, and her work was published in Surgical Endoscopy and Journal of Medical Insight. She also served as administrative chief resident during her final year of residency. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, being outside, growing dahlias, and cooking.
