Description: The vision of the student organization Anonymous Alliance is to promote, celebrate, and grow the inclusive and diverse culture of UMass Chan Medical School. Our mission is to offer opportunities for the community to discuss their unique identities and challenges. This includes monthly, confidential, and welcoming meetings for all students and community-wide events with faculty, administrators, and students to nurture and foster dialogue about race, sexuality, body image, mental health, and other difficult topics people face in school, in the United States and globally. Description: The field of Otolaryngology (ENT) covers an incredible breadth and depth of medical as well as surgical care. The field has evolved considerably and now encompasses seven subspecialties including pediatric otolaryngology, rhinology, facial plastic surgery, neurotology, surgical oncology, laryngology and sleep surgery. Our group serves as a source of didactic lectures, interactive physical exam sessions, and clinical/surgical shadowing opportunities, all with our amazing ENT attendings here at UMass who are excited to show what they love about their chosen field.

Description: The Geriatrics Interest Group (GIG) is an interprofessional group that brings together nursing students (Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing), medical students, and pharmacy students to learn about caring for older adults. GIG organizes an OEE called the Elder Navigator elective that pairs students with older patients to "navigate" them through their primary care appointments. The group is unique in that it is interprofessional and brings together perspectives from both the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing and T.H. Chan School of Medicine to learn about caring for one of our most vulnerable populations, older adults.

Description: This group will appeal to both medical and nursing students interested in surgery, anesthesia, OB/GYN, health policy, and global health in general. Global surgery is currently a rapidly growing field, with The Lancet establishing a Commission on Global Surgery in 2014 after recognizing the growing need for surgery in underserved populations throughout the world. Our group’s focus is to expose students to the fundamental aspects involved in achieving worldwide sustainable and accessible surgical care as well as the necessary steps in developing a career in global surgery. In the coming years as we become an established student group, we are interested in advancing global surgery research at UMass through student involvement.

Description: The Pediatric Interest Group brings together students who are interested in learning more about the pediatric medical field! We have great opportunities for students in many areas of pediatric care. We offer shadowing in the pediatric emergency room as well as a UMass favorite, a chance to participate in pediatric “mini-rounds” with Dr. Tim Gibson! Students shadow Dr. Gibson as he introduces you to his patients and their medical conditions on the inpatient floor. We also offer several informational lunches and dinners throughout the school year, as well as opportunities to get out of the classroom and interact with pediatric patients such as Reverse Trick-or-Treating!

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group (PM&R)

Description: The PM&R Interest Group aims to educate students about a great specialty that many students have little exposure to. Physiatrists look at the complete picture of their patients to help them deal with illness, injury, or chronic disability, and to restore them to the highest level of functioning possible. Patients may be those with stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, complex ortho cases, multiple traumas, sports injuries, musculoskeletal pain, amputation, cancer, or gait disorders, to name a few. PM&R requires a 1 year internship (usually internal medicine or surgery) and 3 years of PM&R. The PM&R Interest Group works to bring together students interested in the specialty and to provide opportunities for education, networking, mentorship, research, and shadowing.

Description: The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Interest Group (PRSIG) is devoted to providing educational opportunities within the scope of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Through shadowing, guest lectures, suture clinics, and journal clubs, we aim to grant students the chance to interact with residents and attending physicians in different settings to help promote consideration of plastic and reconstructive surgery as a possible career option. Early exposure to the various fields allows students more time to construct a competitive resume when applying for residencies in the 4th year of medical school.

Description: The Psychiatry Student Interest Group was created for students who are interested in entering the field of psychiatry, as well as those who are interested in exploring current topics in psychiatry. We host faculty and resident panels, organize opportunities to shadow residents, provide students with the chance to mentor adolescents at the Department of Mental Health, hold movie nights, and have guest speakers. PSIG is a part of the national Psychiatry Student Interest Group Network (PsychSIGN), and encourages members to register with PsychSIGN and attend PsychSIGN's annual regional conference in the Fall and national conference in the Spring.

Description: The Advocates for Healthcare Access in Worcester (also known as the Worcester Free Clinic Coalition) is a partnership between UMass Chan Medical School and five free clinics in the Greater Worcester area, that works to improve the health of underserved populations. In addition to providing urgent care services, we also connect patients with medical and social resources in the community, with a particular focus on enrolling patients in health insurance plans and establishing new primary care relationships for longitudinal care.

Description: Best Buddies is an international organization that promotes one-to-one friendships between individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) and individuals without IDD. Through friendship, Best Buddies aims to increase inclusion of individuals with IDD. Best Buddies at UMass Chan Med matches medical students together with individuals with IDD from the community so that they can form one-to-one friendships. With over fifty Buddy pairs, with students from the medical, nursing, and graduate school, Best Buddies at UMass ChanMed continues to grow.

Description: Kidney Companions (KC) pairs up students interested in internal medicine, nephrology and/or transplant surgery with patients on hemodialysis at a local clinic to meet on a monthly basis. The goal of these meetings is to provide students with an opportunity to have a longitudinal relationship with an individual with chronic health issues. There will also be educational sessions throughout the year to compliment the experience by providing more in depth information on end stage renal disease, kidney transplantation, and dialysis treatments.

Description: Power of Presence is a student group that aims to ensure no one is alone at the end of their life. Our volunteers provide a caring presence for lonely patients and respite for families who can’t always be with their loved ones. Being present with someone in this capacity is a truly intimate, meaningful experience and a great privilege. Volunteers are trained on how to provide companionship, to listen actively, and to respond to non-verbal communication. They may read out loud to patients or give therapeutic hand massage. We also hold lectures a few times a year exploring different themes pertaining to end of life care.

Description: We are a group of medical and graduate students who work with Worcester Technical High School, a nationally recognized vocational school, that has a student population that largely comes from underserved communities in the Worcester area. Several years ago, we started a program to assist students in the biotechnology program in navigating the college process. Many of the students are the first in their family to apply to college and find the process intimidating if not overwhelming. To help, we run a series of workshops through the fall and spring to help seniors navigate through the college application process and assist juniors with SAT preparation.

The goal of WRAP-TMP is to create a meaningful supportive relationship with kids in need! We encourage mentors to reach out to their mentees throughout the year to engage in academic assistance, social outings and more!
