Elective Description: This ID elective combines an inpatient-based clinical consultative service with opportunities for experiences in the outpatient ID clinics. Students may choose a primary site for inpatient work (University or Memorial) or rotate, depending on opportunities available at the time of the block. There will be a maximum of 2 students at each campus at any one time and 4 slots for the elective. The objectives of the rotation are (1) Learn an approach to diagnosis and management of infectious disease problems seen daily by the ID consult service on all clinical services of the hospital. (2) Correlate clinical findings with data obtained by hospital clinical microbiology laboratory. Out-patient experience is available at the Public Health TB clinic and Wound clinic at University campus, and HIV, Travel or General ID out-patients are at the Memorial Campus. Students may elect to spend some time on the transplant ID consult service if desired. Students will attend ID subspecialty conferences held at University and Memorial Campus sites, and one conference monthly at Worcester Medical Center. | |
Note: Students should send an email to both the elective coordinator and elective director if they have a preference for their primary inpatient site. |
