Elective Description: GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: Level B-1: This one month rotation will provide the student an opportunity for direct patient care in the area of surgical critical care medicine which also allows for exposure and experience in practical skills including line placement, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and other advanced critical care procedures. The rotation is an excellent opportunity to explore the possibility of training in the very exciting and challenging field of surgical critical care medicine. INTRODUCTION: The Surgical Critical Care at Memorial SICU for 4th Year Medical Student rotation is a one month elective in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) at the Memorial Campus, offered to the fourth year medical students. The primary goal of the rotation is to provide the medical student an exposure to the surgical intensive care unit and an environment to acquire basic knowledge and skills related to the care of the critically-ill patient under the direction of intensivists from the Departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery. The medical student will be expected to demonstrate basic competence in the following general competencies. |

Note: The Dept of Anesthesiology requires visiting MD students to upload an official copy of their USLME Step 1 scores to VSAS and DO students to upload both USMLE Step 1 scores and Level 1 COMLEX scores to (VSAS) in order to be considered for an elective. |
