HYPE on Campus: Initial Results from an Educational Support Intervention for YA Students with MHCs
November 15, 2024
Michelle Mullen, PhD, Debbie Nicolellis, MS, CRC, CPRP
Young adult college students with mental health conditions (MHC’s) have the worst outcomes of any other student group, with or without disabilities. It is estimated that nearly 86% of college students with (MHC’s) drop out during their college careers; this rate is more than 3 times the attrition rate of freshmen. At the same time, the number of students with MHC’s on campus is growing, with 20% having previous diagnoses and upwards of 60% experiencing symptoms that meet the clinical criteria for depression and anxiety. Early research on barriers to success for these students shows that even more often than psychiatric symptomatology, students endorse barriers such as struggling with time and task management and meeting competing demands.
This webinar describes a new service for young adult college students with MHC’s: "HYPE on Campus". "HYPE on Campus" develops critical skills, such as those related to executive functioning, so that students are able to meet the competing demands and more effectively utilize resources on campus. Initial research results will be discussed with opportunities for questions and comments.
