Program for Clubhouse Research
The Program for Clubhouse Research (PCR) was developed in 2000 to increase the quality and quantity of research on the Clubhouse Model of Psychosocial Rehabilitation. The Program for Clubhouse Research coordinates, promotes, and conducts Clubhouse research projects that are congruent with Clubhouse philosophy.
Additional activities include acting as a clearinghouse for Clubhouse research with the capacity to provide effective communication, information dissemination, and assistance to Clubhouses, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in Clubhouse-related research and research outcomes.
Major Accomplishments and Impact on Mental Health:
Establishing the Clubhouse Model as an Evidence-Based Practice on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Practices and Programs (NREPP) in 2011.
Developing and implementing an electronic version of the Clubhouse Profile Questionnaire that is used by Clubhouse International and Mental Health Clubhouses around the world and administered by the Program for Clubhouse Research annually. CPQ data has been used in ten publications including SAMHSA’s Mental Health United States 2010 and SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health United States 2012. A version of the CPQ was developed and implemented in Brain Injury Clubhouses as part of the first multi-site study of Brain Injury Clubhouses. Conducting A Systematic Review of Evidence for the Clubhouse Model of Psychosocial Rehabilitation. This manuscript has been accessed over 25,000 times, cited 50 times in Clarivite’s Web of Science Core Collection, and is ranked 1st among the tracked articles of a similar age in Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research.
The number of articles published about the Clubhouse Model has more than tripled since the Program for Clubhouse Research was established. Today there have been manuscripts published about Clubhouses in Australia, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Denmark, England, Finland, France, Norway, & Sweden.

Colleen McKay, Director Program for Clubhouse Research, was a Guest Editor in the September 2024 Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal’s Special Issue on the Clubhouse Model.
“Today, over 350 Clubhouse programs in 33 countries affiliate with Clubhouse International and operate as nonclinical community-based recovery centers for adults and young adults living with mental illness. … There is evidence and support for the Clubhouse Model in improving quality of life and social functioning, reducing hospitalization(s) and/or psychiatric symptoms, and promoting employment.
