Basic science research, sometimes also called fundamental, bench or discovery research, is the foundation of the biomedical research continuum (basic, translational, clinical). Basic research is curiosity-driven and seeks to unearth new knowledge so we can more deeply understand the life processes and the genetic and environmental factors related to the prevention and treatment of disease. Here at UMass Chan, our scientists pursue collaborative, interdisciplinary research with a sense of urgency to answer the big questions and fulfill our mission “to advance the health and wellness of our diverse communities throughout Massachusetts and across the world.”
