Dr. Sarwat Hussain, Global Radiology Division Chief here at UMass and former Imamia Medics International (IMI) Global President, gave two plenary lectures at its 8th international conference this summer. The charitable organization held the conference in two Iranian Cities: the Holy city of Mashhad and the capital city of Tehran from July 27-August 10, 2015. Over 600 delegates from 14 countries were in attendance. This was the first time in 35 years that over 400 Americans were issued visas to enter Iran, for the IMI conference.
Dr. Hussain’s lectures were entitled “Medical Imaging and interventions in Obesity” and “Radiology Global: A Case for New Sub-Specialty in Medical Imaging”. Iranian and foreign speakers covered assorted topics of Medical and surgical subspecialties. Some interesting topics included Medical Ethics, spirituality and Medicine, and medical education. Interestingly enough, “Brain Machine Interface: from Six Million Dollar man of Cyborg” was presented by Dr. Naweed Syed, of Calgary, Canada, who has been featured on the Discovery Channel and on Time Magazine. He was the first scientist to "connect brain cells to a silicon chip", creating a Neuro-chip.
The program was punctuated with sightseeing in Mashhad and Tehran including many world heritage sites, as declared by UNESCO. Conference delegates were afforded protocols, reserved for state guests. This included security escorts, 17 buses for transportation and visits to several religious sites and museums. Physician delegates were honored by the universities and the Academy of Medical sciences in Mashhad and Tehran and were invited to forge academic collaboration with the local universities.
