In the Spotlight
Kathy Delongchamp, Fellowship Coordinator
Date Posted: miércoles, abril 01, 2015“I feel like I’m home. I’ve always loved this Department. My heart has always been here”, says Kathy, Radiology Fellowship Program Coordinator. Kathy has been with UMass Chan Medical School for over 38 years. She has worked in four different departments, but Radiology has always been her “home”.
When Kathy started at UMass in 1978, she was a data entry clerk in the Computing Center. Wearing many hats since then, Kathy has also worked previously in Radiology, Animal Medicine, and Office of Research. Kathy’s first time as Fellowship Program Coordinator was in 1991, where she stayed for 9 years, working closely with Sandra Costa, Residency Program Coordinator. Now, years later, Kathy is back at it and is happier than ever in her position saying “Sandy and I are back together again.”
Kathy has a full range of duties including creating on-call schedules for five of the fellowships, coordinating fellowship candidate interviews, arranging for Grand Rounds speakers, putting together reimbursements for book allowances and conferences, scheduling in Lightning Bolt, and many more things. She takes great pride in the radiology fellows and likes meeting the new ones that come to interview in person. Kathy states, “I’m a people person. I love the fellows we have”.
Kathy and her husband Norman, a radiology tech aid here at UMass, live in Spencer, MA. Norm has been here almost as long as Kathy, going on 32 years. They both enjoy playing cards twice a week at a local church and spending quality time with Norm’s mother, Blanche. Crocheting is also high on her list of activities that she enjoys doing in her free time. Learning new hooks and creating projects is a fun and challenging hobby for Kathy. She hopes to retire with the Department someday in the future.
"Kathy is outstanding. She successfully manages the six (soon to be seven) Radiology fellowship programs and always goes above and beyond her duties to make sure the programs run smoothly. She has numerous other responsibilities which she also carries out in an exemplary manner. Kathy is professional, organized and friendly. She has an excellent working relationship with members of the department and the rest of the institution. I met Kathy when she first joined the Radiology Department in 1980. I am lucky to have her as my co-worker and my friend."
"When Kathy came back home (to radiology), we were like ‘a boat in rough seas’ without a fellowship coordinator for several months and struggling hard to keep up with multitude of changes happening to ACGME rules and regulations. She steadied the boat with a smile on her face. Kathy is very well organized. The rotation schedule is done months before the fellowship begins. Nothing gets lost, even in the sea of emails and phone calls. She is always considerate to the fellowship applicants. She urges the fellowship directors to give due credit wherever the candidate deserves and also points out the red flags. One line sums it all 'what would we fellowship directors do without Kathy?'" |
