Three Retirements
Three retirement celebrations were held recently for departing faculty and staff. We wish them well in their next adventures.
Sue MacMaster, MD
A celebration with cake was held for Sue MacMaster, MD on December 27. Dr. MacMaster joined the department as a Clinical Assistant Professor in 1997. She was in the Division of Breast Imaging, the longest serving faculty member in the Division and was a repository for the history of the division. During Dr. MacMasters first position at UMMS, in 1984, she completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Radiology. Then returned to Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NL where she was on faculty until she joined the UMass Faculty. Her colleagues say she is “delightful person with a great sense of humor.” Dr. MacMaster is an international traveler, well informed on world affairs and different cultures. She is extremely fond of treks and hikes and is looking forward to her retirement and plans to travel. “A great mentor and guide to the junior faculty who will be sorely missed.” Best wishes Sue!
Anne Gilroy, MS
Professor Anne Gilroy retired on January 12. Fellow members from the Division of Translational Anatomy along with faculty co-directors for the DSF course gave her a small send-off on her last day. Professor Gilroy joined the faculty at UMMS in 1989. She was a Co-Director in the Development, Structure and Function (DSF) course, Director of Imaging and Anatomy Resources for iCELS, and taught the Advanced Anatomy courses for third, fourth year medical students along with many residency programs. She also was the faculty coordinator for USAID sponsored UMass-Liberian collaboration from the university's Office of Global Health. Professor Gilroy was the editor for several editions of Thieme's Atlas of Anatomy - a text used in many medical school's anatomy courses, including UMMS. Anne was honored with many Outstanding Medical Educator awards over the years, two Dean's Awards, the Lamar Soutter Award for Excellence in Medical Education and at convocation this past September she was presented the Chancellors Medical for Distinguished Teaching. Anne plans to move to Colorado and spend time hiking and camping. She will also continue editing books, working with special Anatomy projects globally and within the US. We shall see her again on April 24, 2018 at 4:00 PM in the ASC Auditorium when she presents "The Last Lecture" at the UMMS Educational Recognition Awards ceremony. Best wishes and congratulations Anne!
Wendie Allain
A retirement reception was held on November 3 for Wendie Allain. Wendie retired from UMMS after 26 years as a Course Administrator. She worked with faculty and administration providing support for first and second year medical students in the Anatomy, Brain, and several other courses over the years. Wendie plans to retire to Maine and enjoy her new bicycle, kayak and hammock. Congratulations, thank you and best wishes Wendie.
