Chiefs' Welcome

Gina Savella, MDWelcome to the webpage of the UMass Chan Psychiatry Residency Program!  As program chief, I am excited to invite you to learn more about our unique program and location.  UMass serves as the largest academic medical center and safety net hospital in central Massachusetts.  As such, I’ve found that our program offers a breadth of experiences that create a strong, comprehensive curriculum while allowing us to nurture our own interests as psychiatrists in training.

Though our program is proud of its robust variety in clinical experiences, residents owe it to the great (and extensive!) faculty at UMass.  Our faculty and supervisors are dedicated to resident education in both the clinical and didactic settings.  We are so fortunate to learn directly from approachable specialists who are invested in our training.  Whether in research, education, leadership, or advocacy, there are ample opportunities to find personalized mentorship. Additionally, our program values resident education and offers a full day each week of protected didactics, of which several seminars are organized and presented by residents themselves.

Importantly, our program understands that residency can be challenging, and leadership is dedicated to supporting you both professionally and personally.  Work-life balance and wellness are values that are emphasized and understood in our program.  From orientation to graduation, our program fosters a friendly and collaborative environment between residents that extends outside of the hospital and clinic.  I have celebrated several birthdays, weddings, and other milestones with my co-residents, and I am grateful to UMass for introducing me to lifelong friends and colleagues!

Please visit Meet the Residents  to learn more about our trainees and what they love about UMass and Central MA!!

I hope you keep us in mind as you navigate the application process.  Please reach out with any questions—I am happy to connect and share my wonderful experience here!
