Dr. Shirk is a research psychologist within the New England VA Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center in Bedford Massachusetts and an assistant professor at the UMass Chan Medical School in the Addictions Division of the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences. He is also an affiliate researcher of the National Center on Homelessness among Veterans. He received his doctorate in social psychology from the University of Georgia and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the New England Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center in Bedford Massachusetts. His current research broadly examines the role of clinical and neurocognitive functioning in addictive behaviors. He and his colleagues investigate the association between emotion regulation, impulsivity, cognitive functioning, mindfulness, and addiction, including substance (e.g., alcohol, opiates, and tobacco) and behavioral (e.g., gambling and compulsive sexual behavior) addictions.
