Cytopathology Fellowship

Fellowship Description

This is a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program in cytopathology satisfying requirements for taking the American Board of Pathology Cytopathology examination.  Fellows will obtain expertise in all aspects of diagnostic cytopathology including performing and interpreting ultrasound-guided fine needle aspirations (FNAs), interpreting GYN and non-GYN specimens, and appropriate application of ancillary techniques including molecular testing.  In addition to training in ultrasound-guided FNA and clinical diagnostic excellence, the program is unique in offering exposure to two other areas of importance for the field of cytopathology: applied basic science to understand the cell biology of diagnostic cell and tissue structural changes; and technology development relating to microbiopsy procurement, rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), and cytologic processing.

As UMass Chan Medical School is the largest provider of diagnostic pathology services and the major oncology center in Central Massachusetts, we see a wide spectrum of cases. The volume and complexity of our cases and the opportunities for scholarly pursuits is well-suited for future stars in the field of cytopathology.

Fellows are given increasing responsibility commensurate with ability to perform U.S.-guided FNA and ROSE. Fellows refine their communication and teaching skills via participation in multi-disciplinary conferences and with resident teaching responsibilities. Research projects are encouraged and all costs to perform the projects including travel to meetings for presentation are funded by the department.
