Tammy T. Nguyen, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

Medical Director, Lower Extremity Wound Clinic, UMass Memorial Medical Center

Investigator, UMass Chan Diabetes Center of Excellence

Publications

A complete list of published work can be found in My Bibliography

MD/PhD Program - University of Utah School of Medicine

Focused on developing a translational research model for neurodegenerative disorders. Joined Dr. Janet Shaw’s laboratory, a leader in Saccharomyces cerevisiae mitochondrial dynamics and trafficking. By leveraging the Shaw lab expertise in mitochondrial movement, I was the first to demonstrate that mitochondrial movement and distribution defects lead to mammalian neuronal degeneration.

Residency Program - UMass Chan Medical School

During my integrated vascular surgery residency training, I pursued research with a clinical focus to develop an understanding of clinically relevant questions in vascular surgery. My clinical research focused on both understanding the technical treatment challenges for aortic aneurysms, and diabetes.

I love being in the lab because we get to foster a sense of purpose and shared scientific exploration with collaborative and engaging team of wonderful people. The fact that we get to identify gaps, make hypotheses, perform hands-on experiments to test those hypotheses, and witness scientific breakthroughs is very exhilarating to me.
