The UMass Chan Medical School Department of Microbiology & Physiological Systems is now the Department of Microbiology, according to Beth McCormick, PhD, the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research Chair II, chair and professor of microbiology and director of the Center for Microbiome Research and the Program in Microbiome Dynamics.

“This change reflects our longstanding commitment to excellence in microbiology research and education,” Dr. McCormick said. “The new name encapsulates our dedication and honors our legacy to advancing the understanding of microbial life and its impact on health, disease and the environment.”

McCormick said the mission of the department remains the same: to foster cutting-edge research, provide outstanding education, and promote collaborative efforts that drive innovation and discovery in microbiology.

“We believe this streamlined identity will better represent our strengths and ambitions, both within our institution and to the broader scientific community,” she said. “We look forward to this new chapter and the exciting opportunities it brings for our department.”
