It was a year to remember at UMass Chan Medical School.
Beginning in January with the launch of the COVID-19 volunteer Vaccine Corps, led by UMass Chan faculty, students and staff, and wrapping up in December with the opening of a new VA Central Western Massachusetts community-based outpatient clinic for veterans on campus, 2021 was notable in many ways.
The Vaccine Corps, which has delivered more than 91,000 shots, continues to make a positive impact on the health of the Worcester region. UMass Chan student volunteers are now inoculating the youngest residents eligible for COVID vaccination, as they staff clinics in the Worcester public schools.
UMass Chan continued to make headlines throughout the year, including the ongoing construction of a new education and research building on campus, the creation of a drive-in Match Day for 168 graduating medical students and the return of in-person Commencement on the football field at Worcester State University.
The gift of $175 million from The Morningside Foundation in September had an immediate and profound impact on the Medical School, including the renaming of the institution to UMass Chan Medical School and securing the future of the state’s only public medical school.
