Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough will be speaking at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC) for veterans on the UMass Chan Medical School campus on Monday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. Hosted by UMass Chan and the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System, the event is limited to invited guests due to COVID-19 restrictions, but will be livestreamed on UMass Chan’s Facebook and YouTube channels.
The CBOC occupies 48,000 square feet on the first two levels of the new, four-story clinical building. The state-of-the-art veterans health and education facility will serve a growing veteran population and support the training of future physicians and nurses to ensure exceptional health care for those who have served. Key features of the new outpatient clinic include 65 exam, consultation and procedure rooms designed for patient-aligned care teams and access to a pharmacy and specialty care including radiology, echocardiology, and physical and occupational therapy.
Development of the CBOC is the result of persistent, multiyear efforts by the VACWMA, UMass Chan and legislative leaders, particularly Rep. James McGovern, and bipartisan support from the administrations of Gov. Charlie Baker and former Gov. Deval Patrick and the Massachusetts Legislature. Rep. McGovern and Sen. Elizabeth Warren are among those scheduled to speak.
