Mark D. Johnson, MD, PhD, was appointed to a new role to advise senior leadership regarding mentoring and career development across UMass Medical School’s three graduate schools and the graduate medical education program. Dr. Johnson, the Maroun Semaan Chair and chair and professor of neurological surgery, will serve as senior consulting vice provost for mentorship, leadership and transformation of UMMS.
Terence R. Flotte, MD, the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor, executive deputy chancellor, provost and dean of the School of Medicine, said that in this new role, Johnson will develop and advise on institutional programming, with a focus on mentoring and formation of leadership skills to increase learner and faculty retention and career development, addressing the needs of students, residents, fellows and faculty.
Johnson will advise Dean Flotte as a member of the Dean’s Senior Advisors Group and will work in collaboration with the vice provosts of student life, faculty affairs, educational affairs and health equity. Additionally, he will work with the Offices of Diversity & Inclusion, Student Life and Graduate Medical Education, and provide leadership insight to selected trainees within groups such as the Faculty Diversity Scholars Program, the KL2 program and the FIRST-Cohort group.
