John Erwin, a widely known and highly regarded government affairs leader, who for 13 years has served as executive director of the Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals, will join UMass Medical School in early January as vice chancellor for government relations, Chancellor Michael F. Collins has announced.
The Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals is a coalition of 12 Boston-area teaching hospitals that collaborate on issues fundamental to their missions of patient care, teaching, biomedical research and community service. Erwin is also an active member and former chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges Government Affairs Committee.
“John brings a wealth of experience in academic medicine to this role; he will lead our comprehensive advocacy efforts on behalf of the medical school, with a particular focus on the state and federal levels of government,” said Chancellor Collins.
Prior to joining the conference, Erwin was the director of government affairs for Tufts Health Plan. Previously, he worked as staff director for the Boston City Council and at the Massachusetts State Council on Vocational Education. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston and earned an MBA from Boston University.
“In September, we announced that Kola Akindele, JD, was promoted to assistant vice chancellor for city and community relations, with primary responsibility for managing our medical school’s efforts and relationships with city leaders, community partners and key stakeholders across the Central Massachusetts region,” Collins said. “The complementary strengths and experiences that Kola and John bring to their roles will serve UMMS well into the future. I hope that you will join me in welcoming John to our very special UMMS community.”
