A new literary journal that aims to build greater understanding of the wide-ranging perspectives of the UMass Medical School community has published its first edition.
Streams of Consciousness, an open access medical humanities e-journal featuring works by the members of the UMMS community, allows students, residents, faculty and staff to share their works of poetry, prose and photography.
“It may seem that all of our experiences are the same, when in reality they are quite a bit different. There is a great diversity of thought,” said Thomas Ford, a fourth-year medical student and co-editor of the journal with psychiatry residents William Bernard Reid-Varley, MD, and Colin Whitworth, DO.
“Through sharing our unique perspectives, we hope to help the members of our community understand and appreciate each other in ways that were previously difficult to achieve,” said Ford, who conceptualized the journal for his capstone project.
Students from all three schools are encouraged to contribute to the next edition. Streams of Consciousness is published annually in collaboration with the medical school’s Lamar Soutter Library. To inquire about publication, contact Ford.
