Starting today, UMass Medical School faculty, staff and students can make their pledges to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Employees Charitable Campaign (COMECC). You can view a full list of COMECC charities and pledge or donate at https://www.umassmed.edu/COMECCDonate (using the same user name and password you use to log in to your UMMS account).

“With more than 1,000 prescreened nonprofits to choose from, COMECC allows you to direct your contribution to a charity doing impactful work in the areas that you care most about,” said Deborah L. Harnois, MS, MBA, JD, associate vice chancellor and chief human resources officer and co-chair of the 2017 campaign effort.

“Every donation goes a long way,” said Robert Layne, MEd, assistant dean for outreach programs and campaign co-chair. “A one-time donation of $20 can buy five meals for a homeless person, four books for a child or two bottles of vitamins for an elderly person. Payroll deduction of $4 per pay period ($104 annually) can provide financial literacy training to one adult and one 8th grade child. Payroll deduction of $20 per pay period ($520) can provide 20 youths with afterschool programs that provide physical activity, mentoring and homework help.

“Added together, our individual acts of generosity can make a huge difference. Please demonstrate the public spirit that is the hallmark of UMass Medical School by supporting the COMECC charity of your choice.”

All employees who pledge to COMECC by the close of business on Nov. 22 will be eligible for a raffle. Prizes include Hanover Theatre gift certificates and a grand prize of a $100 Amazon gift card.

As recently announced by Chancellor Michael F. Collins, UMMS has launched a new initiative, the North Quadrant Support Services, to address some of the socioeconomic barriers to academic success faced by students in the North Quadrant of the Worcester Public Schools.

Through the UMMS COMECC donation site, you can donate to this internal UMMS fund to directly support this initiative and100 percent of your donation will go directly to services that benefit students and families of the North Quadrant.
