The Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health (PURCH) track at UMass Medical School’s Baystate regional campus in Springfield will help medical students learn to manage the overall health of underserved communities and fuel the pipeline of doctors to work in western Massachusetts, according to an article in Jan. 9 Worcester Business Journal.
“What we’re hoping is the students will come as first-year students and learn the clinical aspects of medicine here, so maybe they’ll want to train here, and if they want to train here, they’ll practice here,” Chancellor Michael F. Collins said, in the story.
UMMS is currently enrolling students for the inaugural PURCH class, for the 2017-18 school year. Classes begin in August. Students will spend their first two years focused on basic science at the School of Medicine in Worcester, with some clinical experiences and other educational opportunities at the UMMS-Baystate campus in Springfield. Years 3 and 4 will be largely spent in Springfield, focused on clinical rotations, with some electives in Worcester.
