Kenneth L. Appelbaum, MD |
The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) has selected Kenneth L. Appelbaum, MD, director of correctional mental health policy and research at UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research, as the recipient of the prestigious 2016 B. Jaye Anno Award of Excellence in Communications award.
Dr. Appelbaum, clinical professor of psychiatry, will be recognized for his accomplishments at NCCHC’s 40th National Conference on Correctional Health Care, to be held in Las Vegas Oct. 22-26.
Named after NCCHC’s co-founder, the B. Jaye Anno Award of Excellence in Communications award pays tribute to innovative, well-executed communications that have had a positive impact on the field of correctional health care.
Appelbaum has been with UMMS since 1987, where he has devoted his entire career to the mental health issues of justice-involved individuals. Earlier this year, he called on the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and other mental health organizations to oppose solitary confinement in U.S. prisons in an editorial he wrote for the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Last year, he co-edited the first comprehensive correctional psychiatric textbook, the Oxford Textbook of Correctional Psychiatry. Appelbaum and his co-authors received the APA’s Manfred S. Guttmacher Award in May for their work on the textbook.
In his current role at UMMS, Appelbaum consults with state mental health and correctional systems on safety and service delivery, and with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on mental health services in immigration detention facilities.
