The Lamar Soutter Library has announced the online publication of The University of Massachusetts Medical School, A History: Integrating Primary Care and Biomedical Research. Written by UMMS historian Ellen More, PhD, the e-book tells the story of the school’s founding and its successful efforts to reconcile the demands of primary care education with world-class research.
Beginning with the sometimes raucous story of the politics attendant on bringing the school from legislative enactment to actual groundbreaking, a process lasting more than 20 years, the book continues to chart the school’s development over a 45-year period, from a fledgling endeavor to a successful academic health science center. Today UMMS ranks in the nation’s top 10 percent for primary care education and is a leading center for community service and world-class research.
Dr. More, professor emeritus of psychiatry, is a medical historian specializing in the history of the American medical profession, the history of women physicians and the history of medical education. She was the founding head of the Office of Medical History and Archives at the Lamar Soutter Library.
