Two UMMS faculty members have been honored by the Worcester District Medical Society. Carol Bova, PhD, received the President’s Award and Stephen Earls, MD, received the Career Achievement Award for 2014.
The President’s Award recognizes the recipient for her contributions to organized medicine and the health and well-being of the Worcester community.
Dr. Bova, professor of nursing and medicine and director of the PhD in Nursing program of the Graduate School of Nursing, is an adult nurse practitioner who has specialized in the care of adults with HIV since the disease emerged in the 1980s. Her patient-centered focus is the foundation of her research, which is focused on better understanding the biopsychosocial complexities of caring for HIV-infected patients and their families.
Bova received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Salem State College, master’s in nursing from UMass Medical School and her PhD in nursing from Boston College. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale University School of Nursing before becoming a faculty member at UMMS.
The Career Achievement Award honors a Worcester District Medical Society member who has demonstrated compassion and dedication to the medical needs of patients and/or the public, and has made significant contributions to the practice of medicine.
Dr. Earls, clinical associate professor of family medicine & community health and medical and education director of the Barre Family Health Center, has been associated with the Worcester community since 1976, when he was a member of the first graduating class of the UMass Chan Family Medicine residency program. He then joined the faculty at the Barre Family Health Center, where he practices and teaches today.
An expert in rural health care, Earls earned his MD at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and is board certified in geriatrics and family medicine.
Accompanied by their nominators, Bova and Earls accepted their awards at the WDMS Fall District Meeting in November.
