Researchers at UMMS are at the vanguard of a new wave of medical research using affordable 3D printing technologies, according to a story in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. Using a consumer grade 3D printer, Jie Song, PhD, associate professor, is printing flexible, therapeutic scaffolds no thicker than an adhesive bandage that have the potential to treat damaged bones and tissues. Built from a novel material being developed in Dr. Song’s lab, the scaffold can potentially be loaded with therapeutic stem cells or proteins that a patient needs to heal.
“It really becomes tailored to an individual patient’s need,” Dr. Song told the Telegram. “It’s personalized medicine.”
