The Humanities in Medicine Committee of the Lamar Soutter Library presents The Inevitable Hour: A History of Caring for Dying Patients in America, a talk and book signing by Emily Abel, PhD. Dr. Abel will speak on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m., following a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the library’s Rare Book Room.
Abel, professor emerita of health policy and management and women's studies at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, is the author of numerous books on the history of medicine and public health, including Hearts of Wisdom: American Women's Care for Sick and Disabled Kin; Tuberculosis and the Politics of Exclusion: A History of Public Health and Migration to Los Angeles; Suffering in the Land of Sunshine: A Los Angeles Illness Narrative; and After the Cure: The Untold Stories of Breast Cancer.
She will focus on end-of-life care in discussing her most recent book. Copies of the bookwill be available for purchase and signing at the event, which is free and open to the public.
