UMass Medical School community members are encouraged to participate in two upcoming events in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001: a city memorial concert on Sunday, Sept. 11; and a moment of silence at the Medical School at 8:46 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12.
The city’s commemorative gathering of choruses will take place at 2 p.m. at Institute Park on Salisbury Street. The goal of the event is to raise 1,000 voices in song to honor the victims of 9/11, as well as the men and women serving the nation overseas. The host committee includes Gov. Deval L. Patrick, U.S. Sens. Scott P. Brown and John F. Kerry, and Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray, among other leading local figures.
Professional, community and children’s choruses from across the state will participate. Many state and local agencies will also be represented, including the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund, Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, the National Guard and Massachusetts Veterans Inc. No official speaking program is planned; however, all 221 names of the victims from Massachusetts will be read as part of the ceremony. More information is available online here.
The UMMS moment of silence on Monday will recognize the moment at which the first plane, Flight 11, crashed into the World Trade Center’s North Tower on Sept. 11, 2001.
