Darshak Sanghavi, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics, was featured in “The Heart of a Child,” a special edition of the award-winning news magazine Chronicle, which aired on WCVB-TV on Friday, March 18. The half-hour episode was devoted to pediatric heart defects and highlighted three patients of the UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center, where Dr. Sanghavi is chief of pediatric cardiology.
The program featured ways to prevent defects through the use of folic acid prior to and during pregnancy, and new methods to detect problems, such as a program being implemented at UMass Memorial that uses pulse oximetry to screen all newborns for potentially dangerous defects. The episode also included the story of a local high school hockey player who went into cardiac arrest after being hit in the chest by a puck—and how quick-thinking bystanders restarted his heart. The program reviewed CPR training and its importance in such life-and-death situations.
