Michael Francis, Ph.D.
I have been and am currently the doctoral advisor to multiple (currently 3) graduate students and supervisor to several (currently 1) postdoctoral fellows. All lab members have presented their data at national and international meetings and several have had their work selected for competitive oral presentations. Outside of my lab, I have helped to guide scientific training through participation in thesis qualifying and advisory committees for >40 students. I have independently developed new lectures and taught in the yearly Introductory Neuroscience course as well as several advanced topics courses.
I have mentored several undergraduate Honors Projects from students at area schools, including Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and Assumption College, and hosted numerous (>10) undergraduates for summer internships in my lab. In addition, I have trained 2 students through the Summer Undergraduate Research Program that offers research opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds or who are under-represented in research (http://www.umassmed.edu/summer). Some of these trainees have been included as authors on papers from the lab and a previous undergraduate trainee received the Provost’s award at WPI for his thesis work in my lab.
I have been very active in communicating science to students and the general public. I have given formal and informal seminars at undergraduate institutions in the area (e.g. Assumption College) and myself as well as other lab members have introduced neurobiology and C. elegans to students at local high schools and elementary schools. I helped to organize and lectured in the “Small Brains, Big Ideas” course (http://www.smallbrains.org) in Santiago, Chile that was designed to train Latin American students to use invertebrate model systems for neurobiology research.
