Leadership Fellowship

The UMass Chan Leadership Fellowship, sponsored by the Department of Medicine, is a 2-year non-ACGME accredited full-time academic fellowship that offers experiences in leadership and exposure to executive level administrative functions.

Fellows will: 

  • Receive mentoring and coaching from Department of Medicine and UMass Memorial Medical Center executive leaders
  • Complete the UMass Amherst Isenberg School of Management MBA program and will execute and present one major research project 
  • Co-lead department meetings and quality projects​

Fellows are fully supported for the duration of the fellowship with an annual salary commensurate to PGY-level 4-5 based on the UMass Chan Office of Graduate Medical Education salary scale for the fellowship fiscal year. 

Fellowship core competencies include:

  • Gaining expertise in administration; specifically in the realm of Department of Medicine executive-level administrative meetings including quality initiatives that report back to department leadership
  • Understanding fundamental concepts of Biodesign, need-driven technology development, design thinking, and human-centered design
  • Practicing human-centered design, using Agile methods, and leveraging data to run projects and develop services for implementation within a health system
  • Understanding foundational concepts of health technology innovation (ideation to implementation), including translation of research to technology with commercialization potential
  • Applying MBA program concepts to conducting meetings
  • Defining key knowledge and skills to be a leader and mentor
  • Demonstrating communication skills necessary to lead executive-level meetings
  • Understanding the department's financial management, and data analytics needed to review and conduct research

Other program information:

  • Compensation is commensurate with PGY4-5 level (moonlighting opportunities will be available)
  • On average, will include five Hospital Medicine shifts per month 

Minimum Requirements: 

Applicants must be graduates of an ACGME-accredited residency program by July 1 of the fellowship year and be able to obtain independent medical licensure in the state of Massachusetts.
