Dr. Devadoss completed both his internal medicine residency and fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Saint Vincent Hospital, in Worcester. He also completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at UMass Chan Medical School.

Welcome Fernando Martinez, MD, MS, to Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine!
Fernando Martinez named inaugural vice chair for clinical and translational research and academic chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care
In his role as academic chief, Dr. Martinez will lead the academic functions of the faculty through the Medical School and help grow the division’s research portfolio. As vice chair, he will work to advance the clinical and translational research missions of the Department of Medicine by growing the number of high-impact trials, increasing the number of investigator-initiated trials, and promoting scientific inquiry among early career physicians and scientists. Additionally, he will co-direct the Department of Medicine Clinical Research Core with Dr. Kate Fitzgerald, chair the Research Core Executive Committee, and oversee the Department of Medicine Clinical Research Core’s faculty and clinical and administrative staff. Dr. Martinez will also provide scientific support to the Cancer Research Organization (CRO) leadership team. Dr. Martinez joins the Department of Medicine from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, where he was the chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and the Bruce Webster Professor of Medicine in the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Department of Medicine. He is also a practicing physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Before becoming chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Martinez was professor of internal medicine and associate chief for clinical research in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan Health System in Michigan and served as medical director of Pulmonary Diagnostic Services and co-medical director of the Lung Transplantation Program.
Dr. Martinez is a world-renowned physician-scientist recognized for his seminal studies in the phenotypic and functional classification, and clinical interventions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and interstitial lung disease. Dr. Martinez has over 670 publications, and over 13,000 citations, and has led numerous studies on COPD and ILD, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. His current research focuses on translational aspects and clinical trials in COPD and interstitial lung disease. He also currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the prestigious American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine “Blue Journal.”

Welcome Timothy McAlindon, MD, MPH, to Rheumatology!
In his new role at UMMH, Dr. McAlindon will see patients in both inpatient and outpatient services as a member of the Division of Rheumatology. Additionally, Dr. McAlindon will work on developing a Musculoskeletal Program and will serve as the program’s director.
Dr. McAlindon joins the Department of Medicine from Tufts Medical Center, where he was chief of the Division of Rheumatology, Immunology, and Allergy, professor of medicine, and the Natalie V. Zucker and Milton O. Zucker Chair of Rheumatology. Dr. McAlindon earned his MD from Southampton University Medical School, UK. He completed residencies at Royal United Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Royal Hospital, Torbay Hospital, and Southmead Hospital, all in the UK, and fellowships at Bristol Royal Infirmary and St. Thomas’ Hospital in the UK, and the Arthritis Center at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. McAlindon also holds an MPH from Boston University School of Medicine.

Welcome Shruti Hegde, MD, FACC, to Cardiovascular Medicine!
In her new role at UMMH, Dr. Hegde will serve as the director of the Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT program and will help develop nuclear/PET and CT programs in collaboration with the Department of Radiology and will see patients on both outpatient and inpatient services.
Dr. Hegde joins the Department of Medicine from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, where she was the director of the Cardiac Amyloid program, associate program director of Internal Medicine, and a non-invasive cardiologist. She also held a faculty appointment as an assistant professor of Clinical Internal Medicine. Dr. Hegde earned her MBBS from Kasturba Medical College at Manipal University in Mangalore, Karnataka, India, and completed her Internal Medicine residency and cardiovascular fellowship at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Tufts School of Medicine, in Boston, MA.

Welcome David Dosa, MD, MPH, to Geriatric Medicine!
In his role as chief, Dr. Dosa will lead and help the division grow in all mission areas including clinical services, faculty recruitment and development, research and scholarly activity, teaching and mentorship, and building diversity and inclusion among faculty, trainees, and staff. He will also work to expand age-friendly care of older adults at UMass Chan, UMMH, and in Central Massachusetts communities with emphasis on the 5Ms of geriatric care (mind, mobility, medications, multicomplexity, and matters most).
Before joining the faculty at UMass Chan Medical School/UMass Memorial Health, Dr. Dosa was an associate professor of medicine and health services, policy and practice at Brown University, and an adjunct professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island. He also served as a geriatrician/internist at the Providence VAMC where he directed the Primary Care Geriatrics Clinic and was a member of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care at Rhode Island Hospital. He has authored nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications and has received funding from the Veteran’s Administration, the NIH National Institute on Aging, and multiple private foundations. Dr. Dosa earned his medical degree from The George Washington University and completed his Internal Medicine residency and Geriatrics fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.

Welcome Anil Chandraker, MD, to Renal Medicine!
As the new chief of the Division of Renal Medicine, Dr. Chandraker will lead all academic functions of the faculty through the medical school as well as the clinical practice activities of the faculty of the Division. He will also be responsible for the growth and advancement of research, faculty recruitment and development, scholarly activity, and teaching excellence in Renal Medicine.
Dr. Chandraker attended Glasgow University Medical School in Scotland before completing his residency training in his native city of Manchester, England, and a nephrology fellowship in the West Midlands. Following his nephrology fellowship, he completed a research fellowship in transplant immunology at BWH/Harvard Medical School under the mentorship of Drs. Mohamed Sayegh and Charles B. Carpenter.

Welcome Allan Walkey, MD, MSc, to Health Systems Science!
Dr. Walkey earned his MD from UMass Chan Medical School. He completed his internal medicine residency at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, and completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Walkey joins us from Boston University School of Medicine, where he was the director of Critical Care Clinical Research, co-director of the Evans Center of Implementation and Improvement Sciences, and a practicing Pulmonologist and Intensivist. He is the principal investigator of multiple NIH awards, has published over 200 manuscripts, and has been cited more than 8,000 times. His research and mentorship have been recognized with awards from Boston University, the American Heart Association, and the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr. Walkey also holds a Master of Science in Epidemiology from Boston University School of Public Health.
In his new role as chief of the Division of Health Systems Science, Dr. Walkey will work to engage faculty and leaders in the Department of Medicine and across UMass Chan, fostering the development of health system scientists who will facilitate education, training, and research at our institution and beyond. He is passionate about collaborative research, mentoring outstanding faculty, educating, and promoting faculty development.

We are pleased to announce that after a national search facilitated by the firm Witt Kieffer, Dr. Vaikom Subramanian Mahadevan, formerly the William W. Parmley Endowed Chair in Cardiology and professor of medicine at the University of California San Francisco, has accepted our offer to become the next chief of Cardiology and co-director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence.
Dr. Mahadevan is a world-renowned interventional cardiologist specializing in adult congenital heart disease. After completing specialized training at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and at the University of Toronto, Dr. Mahadevan served with distinction on faculty in Manchester, UK, and then UCSF, where he established UCSF's structural heart program and advanced fellowships. Dr. Mahadevan was highlighted by his referents as a highly collaborative leader, gifted clinical trialist, as well as a dedicated physician. We are very excited that Dr. Mahadevan will collaborate closely with Dr. Theo Meyer as clinical chief of Cardiology, Dr. Chinmay Trivedi as Research Director, and Dr. Andres Schanzer (co-director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence) to establish a vibrant team that will lead Cardiovascular Medicine's educational, research, and clinical missions forward at UMass Chan/UMass Memorial Health.

We’re thrilled to welcome Deborah Blazey-Martin, MD, MPH, to General Internal Medicine!
Dr. Blazey-Martin joins us from Tufts Medical Center, where she has served as Chief of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care for the last nine years. She has also served as the medical director for Tufts Medical Center LCO, NEQCA since 2021, and for Tufts Medical Center Community Care since 2016. During her time as Chief, she established herself as an accomplished leader, spearheading initiatives that have built models of care to utilize data in innovative ways and enhance performance improvement. She has also strived to lead with compassion and implement strategies to help physicians address burnout and the plethora of challenges that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has held several academic and educational appointments including the Director of Continuing Medical Education Conference in the Division of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care, the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the Director of Resident Education for General Internal Medicine. She was the recipient of the Castle Connelly Exceptional Women in Medicine award, 2017-19, and the Kritzman Primary Care Teaching Award at Tufts Medical Center in 2017. Dr. Blazey-Martin earned her medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Primary Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and her fellowship in Internal Medicine at Harvard University School of Medicine.
Dr. Blazey-Martin will serve as the new Vice Chair for Ambulatory Affairs and Chief of General Internal Medicine. In this role, she will oversee the Division of General Medicine and the Department’s ambulatory strategy and operations. She will support our ambulatory physician leads and will work closely with Medical Center and System leaders in this capacity to provide high-quality ambulatory care, access, and a positive work experience for our ambulatory physicians, advanced practitioners, and clinic staff.
