September Letter from the Chair - 2024

Dr. David McManus

Dear UMass Medicine Team,

Happy September! We have a full schedule of Department of Medicine events coming up this month that I hope you will all participate in. Please join us for Medical Grand Rounds this Thursday at noon in the Albert Sherman Center Auditorium where our featured speaker, Nobel laureate Dr. Craig Mello will speak on the topic “RNAi: A Molecular Spark in an Information Inferno.” Next week, on Wednesday, September 11, our Research Seminar Series will start back up with a presentation from Dr. Diogo Magnani, a scientist in our Innate Immunity division, who will give a talk on “Shielding the Young from Viruses: Optimization of Monoclonal Antibodies for Viral Protection Using Nonhuman Primate Models.” That day we will also have a presentation from Dr. Anita Krishnarao, a physician in our GI division who will give a talk on “Managing MASLD: An updated review of “Fatty Liver Disease” as part of the Benedict Primary Care CME Conference.  We are looking forward to hearing about these important topics from our talented faculty in the Department of Medicine and UMass Chan!

This month, we also continue to feature our faculty and trainees in our profile series. Check out our interviews and Q&As with Navine Nasser-Ghodsi, MD, a transplant hepatologist in Gastroenterology, as our Chair’s Spotlight, Laura Gibson, MD, a physician-scientist in Infectious Diseases and Immunology, as our Researcher Spotlight, Rose Martin, MD, as our Resident Spotlight, and Philip Hewes, MD, MPH, a Palliative Medicine fellow, as our Fellow Spotlight. You may read the features on Drs. Nasser-Ghodsi, Martin, and Hewes in this Friday’s Connect newsletter, and Dr. Gibson’s will be in the Investigator newsletter later this month. You may also find these stories on the brand-new DoM news hub on our website. The features are not only a great way to learn about the awesome work that our team is doing, but they are also an opportunity to connect with your colleagues about potential collaborations. You won’t want to miss them!

Finally, please be sure to mark your calendars and save the date for our upcoming fall Department of Medicine Town Hall which will be held on Monday, October 7 at 5:15 p.m.

I hope to see you at the upcoming Department events!

Sincerely,
Dave
