Undergraduate Medical Education
The Division of Med-Peds offers elective educational opportunities to UMass Chan Medical School and visiting medical students who are interested in learning about and possibly training in Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics upon graduation.
The Med-Peds Student Interest Group (MPSIG) meets monthly, under the faculty leadership of Dr. John Solomonides, the UMass Chan Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program Director. In addition to discussion and exploration of combined training, career paths and opportunities, and formal and informal mentoring and advising, the MPSIG hosts several annual events:
- Each September first and second year medical students are encouraged to attend a luncheon that serves as an early introduction to the field of Med-Peds and some resources available at UMass.
- During Med-Peds Field Day, Med-Peds residents and faculty meet with first and second year medical students in small groups to discuss their various specialties, and how Med-Peds training complements their clinical practice.
- The Med-Peds Apprentice opportunity provides students with extremely informal exposure to and experience with Med-Peds faculty or residents and their clinical practice(s). This experience can be longitudinal in nature, and frequently spans multiple years.
- Welcome to Fourth Year focuses on preparing students who have chosen Med-Peds as a specialty for residency application and interview season. Topics of discussion include preparing the ERAS application and obtaining letters of recommendation, interview skills and scheduling, and development of a Personal Statement.
A one-week Med-Peds Flexible Clinic Experience (FCE) is available to UMass Chan third year medical students who desire more extensive one-on-one experience. This FCE is customized to each student’s individual goals and interests, and is supervised by Dr. John Solomonides. Students work directly with Med-Peds residents in the inpatient and ambulatory settings in both departments.
A month-long Combined Med-Peds Ambulatory elective is available to UMass Chan and visiting fourth year medical students. This experience is coordinated by Dr. Susan Fine, Associate Residency Program Director and clinic preceptor. Students work directly with UMass Chan Med/Peds faculty and residents in the Primary Care office in Westborough, MA. Students participating in this elective may also choose to spend time with other UMass Chan Med/Peds primary care or subspecialty faculty and fellows during the month. Further information about the elective can be found here.
