Med/Peds Research at UMass
Quarterly combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics research-in-progress meetings are designed to support and develop the research and educational interests of faculty members from the Divisions of General Internal Medicine, General Pediatrics, and Med/Peds. During this time, faculty can share research proposals, curricular ideas and potential implementation plans for discussion, feedback and collaboration. The meetings are supported by a HRSA grant to expand the research infrastructure of the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and General Pediatrics and to promote primary care research and primary care educational activities. The grant focuses on 4 key elements: the existing core research faculty; existing databases for large populations around which new faculty can explore answerable research questions; existing research entities and groups with whom new faculty can collaborate and develop research agendas; and a commitment to create and implement new distance learning methodologies, focused on managed primary care experiences, for the medicine, pediatric, and med/peds residency programs.
Some current examples include: Obesity, Cystic fibrosis, Evidence based medicine, Transitioning chronic pediatric patients to adult medicine, and Communication between primary care and subspecialty providers.
