University Campus

UMass.jpgThe 407-bed University campus of UMass Memorial Medical Center has a full range of inpatient services. The medical wards provide a mix of general and subspecialty care with 100% of the patients attended by our full-time faculty. Here, housestaff work in a variety of medical ward settings, two medical intensive care units (MICU), one coronary care unit (CCU), a cardiac step down unit, and an active emergency department that is a Level 1 Trauma CenterAs the tertiary referral center for all of central New England, this campus has extensive sub-specialty services, including Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Neurology, and Dermatology, as well as surgical and Interventional Radiology subspecialties.  The University campus is a certified comprehensive stroke center and its cardiac catheterization lab supports one of the highest volume interventional cardiology programs in New England. The University site also has active renal, hepatic, pancreatic and bone marrow transplantation teams

The University campus ward teams include one resident, two interns, and frequently third and fourth year medical students.  We follow a “drip system,” in which every intern admits one to two patients daily with one weekend day off each week.  University campus is also the site of Benedict Primary Care, the largest primary care continuity clinic for the internal medicine residency, as well as the Ambulatory Care Center, which houses most of the outpatient medical and surgical subspecialty clinics.

Both of the Medical Intensive Care Units have sixteen beds, and are supervised by a pulmonologist/intensivist. Our Coronary Care Unit has sixteen beds which are shared between the medical cardiac patients and cardiothoracic surgery patients. This unit is supervised by a combination of medical and surgical faculty from our Cardiovascular Center of Excellence.

Memorial Campus

Memorial copy.pngThe Memorial Hospital is a 319-bed facility located near the center of Worcester. The Memorial campus proudly hosts the only neonatal ICU in the geographic region and the majority of deliveries within the city occur on this campus. The Memorial campus has the only IVF center in central Massachusetts. Elective orthopedic and bariatric surgeries occur here.

On the Memorial Campus, there are three ward teams, two of which are comprised of one resident, one intern and one or two medical students. Admissions are also according to the “drip system” that is followed at the University campus. The Memorial campus provides residents with a community hospital atmosphere with the resources of the University center.

Milford Regional Medical Center

Milford Regional Medical Center is a 121-bed facility serving the nearby community of Milford, MA. Milford Regional features a state of the art emergency department as well as recently renovated inpatient wards and critical care units. The Milford experience includes a mix of inpatient wards service, Medical Intensive Care Unit, and night float. The two wards teams are comprised of a resident, an intern, and 1-2 third-year medical students. The Medical Intensive Care Unit has ten beds and is staffed by a resident and an intern, with the occasional fourth-year medical student. The patient mix here is quite different from that seen in the tertiary care center and affords our residents a community-based experience complementary to that of the Worcester campuses while still providing exposure to a wide variety of disease pathology. Additionally, electives in multiple subspecialties are available to provide further opportunities for a community experience.
