Statement on Diversity and Inclusion
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at UMass Chan Medical School is committed to the excellence in education, leadership, and training of well-rounded internists. Our residency program recognizes the impact of racism and bias on healthcare disparities and inequities in our neighborhoods and throughout our country.
The residency program values diversity. We strive to recruit and retain outstanding physicians from diverse backgrounds in order to meet the needs of our diverse patient population as well as our institutional mission. The program focuses on a “culture-add” approach as opposed to the traditional “culture-fit” approach in the recruitment of our residents. The culture-add approach enriches our program by incorporating the unique and diverse backgrounds and life experiences of each resident. We also recognize the critical value diversity brings to creating a supportive learning environment of inclusion and collaboration.
Our residents, faculty, staff, and patients thrive on cultivating different perspectives based on diverse cultures, and unique experiences with a collective commitment to service, values, respect, and inclusion. We embrace the principles of cultural humility and the provision of high quality culturally sensitive medical care to the diverse patient population we serve.
Through our Internal Medicine Residency Diversity Action Council (DAC), residents are encouraged to challenge racism and health inequities in medicine by engaging in real-world social justice issues that affect our community. These activities include interprofessional participation in committees, curriculum development and service to our community while generating solutions for eliminating health inequities and enhancing the quality of care of our patients.
