J-1 Exchange Visitors

The intent of the J Exchange Visitor category is to enhance educational and cultural exchange between the United States and other countries. Immigration Servies is designated by the Department of State (DOS) to administer a J-1 program for students and scholars to qualified professors, researchers and students who will be engaged in research and/or teaching at UMass Chan.

Requests for J sponsorship should be submitted to Immigration Services 90 days in advance of the desired start date at UMass Chan. If less than 90 days notice is given, it is possible that the individual will not be able to arrive at UMass Chan to begin their program by the desired date.

Any changes in funding source or amount, percentage of effort of the UMass Chan appointment or title must be discussed with Immigration Services before the change takes effect. Such changes may affect J-1 eligibility or may require the issuance of an amended Form DS-2019. Non-UMass Chan affiliations are not permitted, however, brief and short-term assignments may be considered under certain circumstances.

International medical doctors may be engaged in research under UMass Chan J sponsorship, but cannot perform direct patient care or have direct patient contact. The sponsoring department must confirm, as part of eform submission, that the exchange visitor will have no direct patient care, when inviting an MD.
