Cynthia Fuhrmann, Ph.D. (She/Her)

Dr. Cynthia Fuhrmann’s expertise focuses on the scholarly advances and innovation in evidence-based practices supporting the professional development of early-career biomedical scientists. To her role co-leading the Investigator Career Advancement Program, she brings 18 years of experience directing professional development programs for early-career biomedical scientists. She founded and directed the Preparing Future Faculty program at UCSF and the UMass Chan Center for Biomedical Career Development in the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. At UMass Chan, she innovated integration of career development into the graduate curriculum and led its implementation as principal investigator of the campus NIH BEST award. She is a pioneer in the adaptation of Individual Development Plans (IDP) for early-career scientists. She co-authored myIDP, an interactive IDP website hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Science, that universities across the world now use as the foundation of their IDP process, and continues scholarship related to the use of IDPs. Dr. Fuhrmann serves on external advisory boards for the Association of American Universities’ PhD Education Initiative, NSF Innovations in Graduate Education Acceleration Hub, and various federally-funded training programs. Her engagement with a diverse array of organizations has informed her role leading Professional Development Hub, a national initiative working across stakeholders to advance PhD career development in the sciences. Fuhrmann holds a BS in Chemistry from University of California Davis and a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UCSF.
