Catarina Kiefe, Ph.D., MD. (She/Her)

Dr. Catarina Kiefe is a distinguished clinical epidemiologist with 30+ years of experience as a practicing internist and mathematician. With over 330 peer-reviewed publications and continuous NIH funding since 1993, Dr. Kiefe is an internationally recognized thought leader in implementation science, cardiovascular epidemiology, and outcomes and effectiveness research. Her areas of expertise include racial disparities in cardiovascular disease, methods for measuring quality of healthcare delivery, cluster randomized trials to implement healthcare delivery improvements, and epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors and disease. Dr. Kiefe is currently the Principal Investigator on the KL2 component of the UMass CTSA, a career development award for junior faculty, which also includes an internally funded Diversity K Program led by Dr. Milagros Rosal (Vice Provost for Health Equity). She also established in 2014 and has since led an NHLBI-funded T32 program. In addition she is the Director of UMass Chan’s MD-PhD program and the PI of the associated Medical Scientist Training Program  (MSTP) T32. Recently, Dr. Kiefe led the TRACE-CORE program, which not only spawned significant new findings on transitional care for acute coronary syndromes, but also became a significant career launching-pad for early-stage investigators. Over the course of her career, Dr. Kiefe has mentored >100 early-career researchers, including many who are underrepresented in Medicine (URiM). As the inaugural chair of PQHS (2009-2019), Dr. Kiefe also recruited 40+ faculty members, comprising the highest proportion of URiM faculty of any UMass Chan Department.
