The High School Health Careers Program

The Summer High School Health Careers Program is a tuition-free four-week residential program for sophomores and juniors in high school that are interested in entering the health care professions. Participants are housed in dormitories at Worcester State University and they are REQUIRED to reside at the residence hall for the duration of the program. Rooms are randomly assigned to suitemates prior to arrival. Each suite accommodates six people in two doubles and two single bedrooms. Each unit contains a common living and full kitchen area. Participants required to share accommodations. Participants are supervised by Dorm Parents (DPs) in a ratio of 1DP to 5 participants. The HSHCP will provide participants daily meal tickets for lunches through the duration of the program.

Transportation

First Student Transportation, Inc. provides transportation between UMass Chan Medical School and Worcester State University.

Goals

  • To increase the pool of competitive applicants from educationally and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds by enhancing their ability to graduate from high school and prepare for college in order to pursue a career in Biomedical, biotechnology and healthcare professions.

Objectives

  • Expose high school students who may be from educationally and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds to careers in biomedical research, biotechnology, and the health professions at an early stage of their academic development.
  • Encourage program participants to set high academic goals and assist in developing strategies to achieve those goals.
  • Place participants in job shadowing/internship in the healthcare and science professions.
  • Provide participants the opportunity to network with other Massachusetts high school students.
  • Offer program participants the opportunity to interact with medical students, scientists, healthcare professionals and network with their peers.
  • Inform participants about the Biomedical Careers Fair Workshops, the college application and financial aid process.
