We have several initiatives in hiring and mentoring that are designed to help faculty navigate the various challenges of leading an academic research group. Resources for Faculty
The continued success and wellbeing of our faculty is a top priority in the BMB department. Many of our senior faculty have played active roles in the development of formal support and mentoring programs for junior faculty. The support structures available for our faculty are listed below:
Faculty Advancement
- Vice Chair of Faculty Development Dan McCollum, PhD coordinates nomination of faculty for awards to increase local, national, and international recognition of their accomplishments.
- In the BMB, each junior faculty member is assigned two faculty mentors.
- The UMass Chan Office of Faculty Affairs website contains information about requirements for faculty applications, pathways to promotion, faculty development initiatives and more.
- This includes lists of internal and external faculty development programs.
- This also includes the Women's Faculty Committee.
- Investigator Career Advancement Program (iCAP) - an efficient, cohort-based approach to junior faculty development that includes mentorship and sponsorship. This program is run by Vice Chair Dr. Mary Munson.
- The Diversity and Inclusion Office (DIO) works to support all faculty.
Health & Well-Being
- The Employee Assistance Program provides confidential, free, and personal assistance with a variety of issues including mental health, childcare information and resources, and workplace coaching.
- Faculty wellness is an important priority at UMass Chan Medical School. Some resources aimed at supporting faculty health include:
- Immigration Services supports international faculty.

Research
- The UMass Chan BRIDGE Innovation and Technology Development team facilitates commercialization of research discoveries.
- The Center for Clinical and Translational Science supports the development of new products and approaches to improve human health.
- Resources to support animal research include:
- The Animal Core
- The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
- The Office of Research provides various resources to support researchers.
- Resources for those whose research includes human subjects are provided by the UMass Chan Institutional Review Board (IRB).
- We have over 40 different research core facilities available for labs at UMass Chan Medical School.
- The University maintains a Tissue Culture and Enzyme Freezer Supply.
Education
- Resources and guidelines for faculty regarding issues ranging from dissertation exam committee membership to relevant policies can be found here.
- The Information Technology (IT) Office maintains many different support resources for faculty, including Academic Technology resources.
- The Lamar Soutter Library provides many resources for faculty, including the DRIVE curriculum appraisal tool to reduce bias in education.
- UMass Chan Medical School maintains the Interprofessional Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation (iCELS), which is available for use for a variety of educational pursuits.
Funding
- The Office of Sponsored Programs provides support from the beginning to the end of a grant lifecycle.
- The Office of Advancement supports faculty funding applications to foundations and more.
