Values Statement
“In our department, we honor and embrace the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As such, we are opposed to discrimination in all forms. We are focused on tackling challenges in proactive and substantial ways and fostering a culture of lifelong learning about systemic barriers in science. We intentionally and thoughtfully support an inclusive environment in our department and celebrate what each individual brings to our scientific community. Great science is achieved through collaboration with others, and the best science comes from working together with scientists who have different experiences and expertise. We strive to develop both the scientist and the person to help individuals attain their definition of success.
The BMB department and the Diversity Action Committee, through its programs and its Diversity Equity Action Plan (DEAP), are working towards achieving the following goals:
- Recruiting, retaining and advancing students, postdocs, staff, and faculty from historically excluded populations who are currently underrepresented.
- Fostering dynamic communities and spaces for individuals to learn and reflect.
- Supporting our diverse community through activities such as seminars, a book club, and social meet and greet events.
- Encouraging participation in and collaboration with other campus-wide and community initiatives.”
