Division of Acute Pain
The acute pain and regional anesthesia services at UMass Memorial Medical Center provide comprehensive, collaborative care to patients with postoperative and post-traumatic pain. Our team of clinicians use a multimodal approach to optimize pain control. We work together with the medical and surgical teams to create comprehensive pain management plans with the goal of providing our patients with the best possible pain management and functional capacity. Our strategies involve preemptive anesthesia, ultrasound guided regional anesthesia techniques as well as the placement of indwelling catheters. We also provide consultative services for patients with complex cancer pain. We work with our colleagues within the divisions of oncology and palliative care to treat patients with the best evidence-based treatment options.
Residents will rotate on the acute pain and regional anesthesia services during their CA-1 and CA-2 years. During this rotation residents will learn evidence-based approaches to multimodal perioperative pain management and post-traumatic pain management. There is a strong emphasis on providing education to residents regarding various ultrasound guided techniques for regional anesthesia blocks to treat postoperative and post-traumatic pain. There is also a focus on the management of indwelling regional and epidural catheter infusions.
Elective rotations in the CA-3 year are available to provide residents with a special interest in acute pain medicine and regional anesthesia. We also provide an elective opportunity to fourth-year medical students who are interested in learning about acute pain medicine and regional anesthesia.
