A glimpse at UMass Chan Medical School

Deeply rooted in its educational goal of providing quality medical, research and nursing education to its students, UMass Chan Medical School is known for its collaborative research in areas such as of RNA therapeutics, gene therapy and digital medicine; and home to two Nobel Prize winners: Craig C. Mello, PhD, (2006), and Victor R. Ambros, PhD (2024). The Medical School’s clinical partner is UMass Memorial Health and there are regional campuses in Springfield (focused on population-based health) and Burlington (focused on leadership).

How we rank

UMass Chan Medical School is consistently ranked among the top U.S. medical schools and schools of osteopathic medicine for excellence in primary care education by U.S. News & World Report in its annual review of “Best Graduate Schools.”

Beyond its core mission of distinction in medical education, UMass Chan Medical School is a major center for research. The institution ranks near the top among public medical schools in the Northeast in funding awarded by the National Institutes of Health, with $197 million in NIH funding in FY 2024. Federal and private research grants and contracts at UMass Chan rose from about $2 million in 1977 to more than $300 million in FY 2024.

Home to nearly 7,000 employees, UMass Chan has been named to The Boston Globe’s list of Top Places to Work in Massachusetts for three years in a row, and a “DEI champion” two years in a row. Both designations are based on the results of an employee survey.
