My time as an Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes fellow at the University of Massachusetts has been one of the most profound and meaningful training experiences of my medical career. Over the course of my two-year fellowship, I was provided with a comprehensive academic environment within which I strengthened my Endocrine-related knowledge base, improved upon relevant clinical skills, and mastered pertinent procedural techniques unique to the field of Endocrinology. Due to the all-encompassing yet immersive curriculum set forth by the faculty and staff at UMass, I have been able to seamlessly begin my own Endocrinology practice in both the ambulatory and acute care settings within a large, multi-campus health system in Southeastern Michigan where I currently serve as the Associate Medical Director of Subspecialties. The opportunities provided to fellows at UMass are varied and far-reaching in their scope and impact. For instance, my time as a Longitudinal Clinical Preceptor to a first year MD/PhD student at the UMass Chan Medical School was one of the educational highlights of my time at UMass; whereas writing and publishing a review article on the management of adynamic bone disease remains one of my most cherished academic achievements. Amidst the multitude of opportunities, it was the numerous patient-provider relationships I fostered during fellowship that continue to resonate as some of the most meaningful experiences of my clinical career. That said, perhaps the most significant aspect of my fellowship training was the unparalleled mentorship provided by the clinical and research faculty at UMass.  The ability to support physicians during the early stages of their medical careers all while providing them with the ability to grow into the distinct clinicians they were meant to be is where the faculty at UMass shines and for that level of ongoing guidance and friendship I am incredibly grateful. Therefore, as you begin this important next step in your medical training, I encourage you to find a fellowship program that is nurturing, challenging, and motivational, just as the UMass fellowship program was for me. It is the experiences had and the connections made during this very special time that will continue to reverberate and inspire you for many years to come. I have to say that the 2 years of my fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at UMass Chan Medical School were probably the best 2 years of all of my medical training. The program has a phenomenal program director, great faculty, supportive staff and a very strong curriculum. My inpatient and outpatient experience was vast and hands-on ultrasound/FNA training was readily available. We also had exposure to Obesity Medicine, Pediatric Endocrinology and Reproductive Endocrinology. I couldn’t have asked for better training to prepare me for my current practice in the community.

I had the wonderful opportunity to do my fellowship at UMass. This is an excellent place to train and prepare for real world practice. I had seen fascinating and rare cases in Endocrine clinic, yet also saw bread and butter endocrinology cases which built my confidence to care for patients in my practice.  I am so thankful for the support I received from the clinical attendings throughout my fellowship to help shape me into the endocrinologist I am today.

If I were asked to repeat any phase of my clinical training, I would go back to the Endocrinology fellowship at UMass. I enjoyed my time at UMass so much that I always felt this place as my second home.

I cannot say enough about the great mentoring of the faculties and support of the staff. Besides excellent clinical training, the program provides enormous supports to fellows to direct quality improvement and research projects according to their interests. In my opinion, choosing endocrinology as my career path and UMass as my fellowship training program was the best decision I ever made in my career. 

In 2019, I joined in clinical practice after my fellowship graduation. I appreciate every day the impact of the great mentorship, and the experience of working in a friendly environment during my time there. It has made a tremendous impact on my career and will always stay with me.

The two years I spent at UMass have been an incredible learning experience. The greatest strength of the program is the faculty who are accomplished, supportive and fun to work with. The clinical training is solid with several opportunities to pursue research and quality improvement projects. Fellows are encouraged to give feedback and play an integral role in bringing on changes. I would choose UMass if I did had to do it all over again.

I have enjoyed my work as an endocrine fellow at UMass. I am sure that by the end of my fellowship I will be confident in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of endocrinological problems. I have been exposed to not only common endocrinological problems but also have had the opportunity to diagnose and treat some of the rare endocrinological diseases.

The endocrinology fellowship at UMass has all the essential components of a strong training program. There is an abundance of interesting cases and the clinical exposure is definitely one of the strong suits. All of the faculty we work with are fantastic--always approachable and willing to dedicate their time and efforts to fellow development and learning. If you enjoy teaching, this is a great place to be as there always residents and medical students rotating with us. It is obvious that the program director, Dr. Torres really cares about the fellows and she always goes above and beyond to make sure we are happy and have what we need to grow as future endocrinologists. I am confident I will come away from this fellowship with a strong clinical background and should be well prepared for future practice.
