Mission Statement

UMass Dermatology Residency Program seeks to recruit curious, compassionate, dedicated, and resilient individuals, who have demonstrated a sustained interest in contributing to their communities and to the field of dermatology, and who represent the diverse community we serve.

Through both a continuity clinic model that provides comprehensive exposure to the practice of dermatology in today's world, as well as dedicated time and flexible support for nurturing professional passions, we aim to provide world-class clinical training that prepares residents to excel in independent practice or advanced training immediately upon graduation. We commit to providing personalized mentorship from dedicated faculty, robust didactic and extracurricular experiences, exposure to a diverse patient population, and a uniquely positive work environment that fosters collegiality, wellness, and personal growth.

We aim to graduate residents who will honor their UMass Dermatology training by delivering top-quality care to all those in need, sustaining their commitment to lifelong learning, scholarship and the education of others, and pursuing their passions, while finding joy in their work.

We perform a holistic review of applicants. We do not exclude applicants based on USMLE scores, allopathic vs. osteopathic, location of medical school (foreign or U.S), or prior residencies. For the 2024-2025 ERAS® cycle, our program will be participating in the supplemental ERAS application offered through the AAMC’s ERAS program. Applicants are required to complete the MyERAS application, and participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional.

Selection for an interview is based on academic performance, demonstrated commitment to and excellence in community service, leadership and/or research activities, and personal qualities that will promote the collegial and dedicated culture of our department. Due to the patient population we serve and the value we put on fostering a workplace with many voices and ideas, special consideration is given to applicants who bring unique perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences that serve to enhance the diversity of our department.

Supplemental Statement/Signaling

We participate in the ERAS Supplemental Application process. We also participate in the ERAS signaling system and consider signals an indication of applicant interest in receiving an interview at our program during the application review. We interpret gold signaling to mean we are in an applicant's top 3 programs and silver signaling to mean we are in an applicant's top 28 programs.

Interview Dates

Interviews are by invitation only and we typically interview approximately 30 applicants. As a result, there are numerous extremely qualified individuals who are not offered an interview. This year, we will be participating in the Dermatology Coordinated Interview Invite Release on Monday November 18, 2024. Interviews will be held virtually on Monday, January 13, 2025, Wednesday, January 15, 2025, and Friday, January 17, 2025.

Interview Process

We will be holding virtual interviews for the 2024-2025 interview season.  There will be an opportunity to meet with residents and with all faculty members in interviews. We will not record any part of the interviews and will ask applicants to sign a consent agreeing not to record.

After interviews, we will be happy to answer any questions and receive any correspondence.  However, we do not expect or encourage communication from applicants after the interview.  Likewise, to ensure a fair match process, we will not communicate with applicants after the interviews.

Available Positions

We offer four PGY2 positions in the upcoming match cycle and we participate in the NRMP.
